Summertime is approaching, which means teachers are extremely busy. Thankfully, this month calls not only for National Teacher Appreciation Day on May 8th, but also another round of Fun 107’s Teacher of the Month Award. It’s time to recognize our educators for all they do.
Nothing beats your child coming home from school truly excited about what they learned that day. School teachers can be key figures in a young person’s development, and too often they go unnoticed. At re:fab, we wanted to change that for our community by teaming up with WFHN Fun 107 to honor our local Southcoast teachers who go the extra mile.
The Teacher of the Month Award has been going on for years and it is one of our favorite community activities. This year, between February and the end of May, we have been the project’s main sponsor. Teacher of the Month is about recognizing those Southcoast educators who go above and beyond for their students. It’s also about giving children the chance to display their enthusiasm about their learning environment.

Here’s how it works; The student or student’s parent goes to the Fun 107 website to nominate their favorite Southcoast teacher. They will write a submission explaining why they feel the teacher means a lot to them and why they deserve the award. We then read through all the submissions, tally the total for each teacher and decide on the deserving winner. That’s when the real fun begins.
After reading through all the positive, heartwarming submissions sent in from students and parents alike, it’s time to meet up with our friends at Fun 107. Together, we plan a time to surprise the winning teacher and their class. This is our favorite part. For a moment, the classroom is always confused. But when we begin announcing the award, everyone gets excited. We love ensuring children that their voices matter in the decision. They are so visibly proud of their teacher, it’s an amazing experience. Before we leave the school, the winning teacher is presented with gifts for their classroom and personal life, like classroom supplies, Bluetooth speakers, iPads and Staples gift cards.
For an insider look at exactly what we do, check out the video below. In the month of March, we surprised Sarah Barroso of East Fairhaven Elementary, and her class went wild! Don’t be surprised if you need a tissue.
